Piece of Pi

Tonight at the dinner table Cecilia was bragging about how she knew so many decimal places of pi, and recited them over and over and over again. Ruby wanted to know what pi was, so Cici explained it to her (sort of).

Our dining room table doubles as a nerd factory.

Sounds Like A Plan

Cici had plans to be at a sleepover on a recent weekend, leaving me and Rubes alone to fend for ourselves.

Melissa: So, Rubes - what should we do on Friday night without Cice?
Ruby: I don't know ... Rock on?

Stuff Like This Kills Me

Ruby is taking a shower in the new bathroom, and she's been in there for awhile. Cecilia, without prompting, goes to the bathroom door:

Cecilia: Rubes, are you okay? Do you need help turning the shower off?
Ruby: Yeah, and I'm almost done.
Cecilia [entering the bathroom]: Okay, I'm coming.

These moments are fewer in number these days because Cecilia is at an age where it is her duty to find Ruby annoying in every possible way, but when they do happen they are magical moments that melt hearts. Especially mine.

This One Is Tricky To Explain

For as long as I can remember, I've had this strange habit when I watch movies or television, and occasionally while listening to a speaker: I count syllables. I usually do it on one hand, and I like to tap out the syllables on my fingers, needing the sentences to end on either my thumb or my pinkie fingers (9 syllables is the ultimate, you see). If it doesn't happen, I'll add or remove a syllable quickly in my head, re-tap it out on my fingers, and then move on to another sentence. I acknowledge it's a VERY peculiar little habit, and I'm not sure why exactly it started in the first place, nor am I always immediately aware that I'm doing it. So then. That's weird.

While driving in the car with Cecilia the other day, she mentioned that she's got this strange habit that I might find funny: She counts letters. She went on to tell me that sometimes when she's listening to someone speak, she'll count out letters of words they're saying and she needs them to be divisible by 9 because, if they're not, she's dissatisfied.

I have never told her about my own weird thing. I nearly drove off the road.

I don't know what exactly it is that we have in common - some strange freckle on the brain, perhaps - but the similarity was bizarre enough that my jaw dropped. I've said 1,000 times that she is essentially a clone of her father, but this little peccadillo has Melissa written all over it...

She's Not Ready for Wheel of Fortune

Yesterday I took the girls to the local coffee shop after school, NOT because I was locked out of the house, nooooooooo way. ONLY because it seemed like a great place to hang for an hour while we waited for Adam. Cecilia toiled away on her homework (worksheets that gave me a headache just looking at them), and Rubes and I entertained ourselves with a rousing game of Hangman. I thought I could beat her pretty handily - she's 6 after all - but then she came up with a phrase that I just couldn't crack. When all my guesses were up, she filled in the missing blanks and clued me in:

MOMMY ROOLS

She was so pleased with herself.

News and Notes

  • This morning the bed contained 1 mom, 2 daughters, 2 cats, and a lot of giggling. This is how days should start.
  • The other morning I called the girls to the table for a meal, and I happened to have a piece of paper in front of me at the time. Cecilia: "Is that our agenda?"
  • I've been meaning to mention that Ruby was selected (elected?) to Student Leadership, and she is seriously enjoying this outlet for her opinions and ideas. Last month this meant she worked on a service project to collect household items for the less fortunate, and this month she worked with her peers to come up with some school spirit ideas. On Friday it's pajama day at school, and as she told me several times yesterday "I helped make that."
  • Over breakfast this morning (oatmeal!) Cecilia asked if I wanted to know about the book she just completed, and about 10 minutes in I asked if perhaps she could just hit the highlights so she would still have time to eat and get to the bus on time. Not only was she describing all the major plot lines, she included information on subplots, dialogue, and the scenery. Roughly half of this was shared while she held a piece of toast about 3 inches from her mouth. The child likes to read.
